What Are Cornell Notes?

Cornell Notes are a structured way to take notes that helps you organize information, identify key ideas, and review more effectively. The format was developed at Cornell University and is widely used in middle and high schools.

The page is divided into three sections: a narrow Cue Column on the left for questions and key words, a wide Notes section on the right for detailed notes, and a Summary section at the bottom where you write the main ideas in your own words.

How to Use Cornell Notes

  1. Before reading: Write the chapter title and date at the top. Skim the chapter headings and vocabulary words to preview what you'll learn.
  2. During reading: Take notes in the right-hand Notes column. Write down key facts, details, and ideas. Use abbreviations and short phrases. Skip lines between main ideas.
  3. After reading: Go back to the left-hand Cue Column. Write questions about your notes, key vocabulary words, or main ideas. These become your study guide.
  4. Review: Cover the Notes column with a piece of paper. Read each cue and try to explain the answer from memory. Check your notes to see if you were right.
  5. Summarize: Write a 2–3 sentence summary at the bottom in your own words. If you can't summarize it, review the section again.
